Djungan Traditional Owner / Elder
DJUNKINBURRI (meaning Djungan Man) – JIM ARCHER is a Djungan Elder and Traditional Owner of Nguddaboolgan Country, south west of Cooktown which starts south of the Mitchell River extending further southwest to the Walsh River.
Jim has been an Artist since 1973 and was tutored by the late Dick Roughsey (the famous Aboriginal Artist and Author from Mornington Island) and the late Percy Tresize (a FNQ Landscape Artist). Jim’s first successful exhibition was a joint exhibition with both these Artists in Cairns in the late 1970’s. Jim also had successful joint exhibitions with Traditional Owners of Archer Point held in Cairns in the late 1980’s.
Jim was a self-employed Aboriginal Artist for over 20 years, marketing and selling his own artworks at the Kuranda Markets, various Exhibitions and commissioned works upon request.
Now retired, Jim continues his culture by passing on knowledge to the younger generation through caring for country, storytelling, painting as well teaching and maintaining traditional art practices including barking tree’s, didgeridoo making and collecting and preparing ochre for painting.
